Please join my wife Laurie and me for our "2nd Monday" of every month movie and discussion night in Carlton at the J. M. Payne Memorial Presbyterian Church. 6:30 PM. It's free and a lively discussion is always welcome. If you would like to add your name to the movie e-mail
list, just send a note to Laurie at lhilty@frontiernet.net and you will
receive our regular "2nd Monday" notices.
Next event, Monday, December 13th. This month we will be showing "Committing Poetry in Times of War." While concerned with events of a few years ago, this film is unfortunately just as relevant for today, with the FBI raids on "peace terrorists" and the calls on Fox News to assassinate Julian Assange.
Committing Poetry is a poetic glance at events that defined the struggle of a
nation at war abroad, and with its people. When the bombs began to fall on Iraq,
Humanities Teacher and Youth Poetry Coach, Bill Nevins, was suspended and later,
fired, from his teaching job after standing up for student freedom of
expression. His outspoken Rio Rancho High School Poetry Slam Team was forcibly
disbanded and silenced. Nevins was the last of seven New Mexico educators
removed by fearful administrators seeking to quell the questions, thoughts,
debates, and artwork of students.
The House will convene in Regular Session at 12 noon on Tuesday, Jan. 4,
2011.
